Batman is one of the world's most well-known and beloved superheroes. In addition to the moniker, Batman, he is also known as "The World's Greatest Detective", "The Dark Knight" and "The Caped Crusader". Originally a comic book hero, Batman has since been featured in movies, television programs and cartoons.
Batman's first foray into the world of comic book superstardom began in 1939, when he appeared in the 27th edition of Detective Comics. Like most superheroes, he was given an alter-ego. His was Bruce Wayne, a wealthy gentleman, who was no stranger to female companionship. In addition to being a playboy, he was noted for his philanthropy and work as an industrialist. Bruce Wayne's early life was extremely tragic. As a young boy, he witnessed his parent's murders. Deeply affected about it, he dedicates his life to fighting crime. To that end, he trains his mind and body vigorously and chooses a bat-like costume to wear during his crime-fighting exploits. Batman fights both crimes and villains in Gotham City. He gets some help from a cast of supporting characters, amongst them, Robin his crime fighting partner, Alfred Pennyworth his beloved butler, Batgirl and Jim Gordan, who is Gotham's police commissioner. In addition to fighting crime, Batman regularly battles a cast of super-villains. The Joker, Two-Face, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, the Riddler and Catwoman, are some of the most notable and dangerous.
