A Quick Game Review Of Batman Underworld
It is a bit tricky to guess why the author named this game exactly Batman Underworld. What has actually inspired him to put such title label? What we know is that there's a DC Comics release Batman R.I.P: Batman in the Underworld. We have also found one occurrence of the Underworld among Lego superhero stories, but we highly doubt that was the original inspiration. And yet, there's another comic issue Underworld Unleashed: Batman - Devil's Asylum Vol 1 #1 which is a Batman comics series counting several issues, inspired by Underworld Unleashed cross-over. The game sure does remind a bit of the old Batman Underground game. Nevertheless, whether it was the original idea or not, the game surprisingly turned to be quite good and refreshing.
How to playThe game is essentially just another platform shooting arcade and there isn't much to it. There are a lot of keyboard controls and they're not easy to cope with. You need to use both hands, left - for walking left and right, looking down and up, and the right hand to shoot at the aliens and throw grenades. The overall atmosphere is excellent. The game really reminds of the old classical shooting arcades. It's just that it seems to easy to play. No matter how many bullets you take, so stay alive. The final combat with the giant hydra was a bit hard. I tried to take it down with few shots since I run out of grenades and than I realized that hydra is using some sort of strong laser beam or field, that if it caught you, it sucks the life out of Batman like in seconds. So you need to stay away from the Hydra beam as much as possible. On the other hand, you need to approach close enough to make a good hit.
EnemiesThere are just a couple of enemy types:
- Regular alien soldier. This one can be taken down with only one shot and it brings just 5 pts
- Flying alien bug. This once is harder to shoot down and it also drops bombs at you. 15 pts.
- Giant 'boss' hydra. I couldn't take it down. If anyone else did it, please leave comments on how did you do it.
