Batman the popular superhero comic book character, was first introduced to the world in 1939. His development was commissioned by the powers-that-be at National Publications, (which would later become DC Comics). The publishing house wanted to build on the success of perhaps the most popular and beloved superhero of all, Superman.

Batman was not bestowed any superpowers. Instead, he worked hard to develop the two tools every man on earth is born with, his mind and body. His wealth has also been an attribute. Batman's athleticism, intellect and ability to deduce are his greatest weapons. His gadgets have also been helpful.

Batman is not a one-man, crime-fighting machine. He, instead, has a supporting cast who play a significant role in his success. Some work alongside him extensively, while others only occasionally. His closest friends and allies are Robin, his loyal partner and Alfred, his trusted butler. He has also, at one time or another, worked alongside Green Arrow, Flash, Batwoman and Spiderman.

Batman not only takes on crime but supervillains. Some of his most noted enemies are the Joker, Catman, Catwomen, Penguin, Mad Hatter, Mister Freeze and the Scarecrow. The Dark Knight Many people remember The Dark Knight as the last movie the late actor, Heath Ledger, starred in. Ledger played the Joker in a way that no other actor had before. Some people speculated that he became so enveloped in the character that he had a difficult time coping and going back to life as normal. Whatever the case, Ledger died surprisingly and tragically in his New York apartment, leaving behind a daughter with ex-girlfriend and fellow actor, Michelle Williams. He was 28 years old.
